WHY DOES CANNABIS TURN PURPLE?

WHAT CAUSES CANNABIS TO TURN PURPLE?

All plants have naturally occurring pigments.
The most dominant pigment in most plants (including cannabis) is chlorophyll, which, apart from helping plants photosynthesise also gives them their green colour.

Plants, on the other hand, have a plethora (fancy word for lots) of different active pigments, such as carotenoids and anthocyanins.
In the absence of chlorophyll, plants may absorb sunlight and photosynthesise using pigments such as anthocyanins.
Anthocyanins, unlike chlorophyll, naturally absorb all wavelengths of the sun except those in the indigo spectrum, which gives plants their purple colour.

Purple cannabis plants (or any purple plant for that matter) receive its colour because anthocyanins, rather than chlorophyll, are the primary pigment in their leaves and flowers.

WHAT PARTS OF A CANNABIS PLANT CAN TURN PURPLE?

WHAT PARTS TURN PURPLE?

Your entire plant can turn purple depending on the number of anthocyanins and where they are found.
This is uncommon, but it is possible.
Usually, only four main areas of a marijauna plant turn purple.

Purple can appear on four different areas of your cannabis plant:

  1. Pistils:
Pistils are the fine hairs that protrude from your buds, indicating that they are female.
Pistils begin as a creamy white colour and grow to an orange/red/brown colour.
However, your plant's pistils may turn pink or purple, and this colour will persist when you harvest, dry, and cure your buds.
  2. Calyxes:
Calyxes are the little pods that comprise your buds.
Cannabis flowers are made up of hundreds of these little calyxes stacked on top of each other.
The calyxes of the flowers open to display their pistils, which are meant to catch pollen from male cannabis plants as the flowers grow.
  3. Leaves:
Your cannabis plant's fan and sugar leaves may also turn purple.
They won't, however, have much of an impact on the final colour of your buds because you'll likely be trimming away the majority of the leaves during your post-harvest work.
  4. Trichomes:
The microscopic crystals that coat your buds are known as trichomes.
While they normally begin clear and gradually grow opaque, then amber, it is conceivable for them to turn purple as well.

All of these sections of a cannabis plant can turn purple, and it usually depends on the genetics and the environment in which they are cultivated.
Even if the genetics have been properly selected, you should also try to give the optimal atmosphere for your cannabis plants to exhibit the unusual colors.

HOW TO GET YOUR PLANTS TO TURN PURPLE?

GETTING YOUR PLANTS TO TURN PURPLE!

Here are a few tips to increase your chances of harvesting some eye-catching purple buds this season:

  1. GET THE RIGHT GENETICS RIGHT FROM THE START

Starting with the appropriate genetics is the greatest way to end up with lovely purple (or black, pink, etc.) buds.
Genetics will have the most influence on the final colour of your plants.
If you're determined to grow purple weed, look for purple strains that have been specifically bred for their distinct colour.
Remember that after pruning, your buds will lose some of their colour, so choose strains with the most intense purple pigmentation you can find.

Even if a strain is purple, it may still require certain conditions to exhibit other colours, however it will be far easier to create than with other strains.
    These conditions include:
    (a) Temperature, (b) Humidity, (c) Genetics, (d) pH value and (e) Nutrient content.

  2. CHANGE YOUR TEMPERATURES

While you may be excited to see your plants turn purple, this usually occurs only after they have completed vegetative growth and have begun flowering.
Once your plants have reached the flowering stage, you should provide lower temperatures because cold causes chlorophyll to break down and can influence your plant to produce more anthocyanins; ideally, there should be a difference of about 10-15°C between daytime and nighttime temperatures for this to occur, but it can vary depending on strain. Additionally, offering these drastic temperature changes can assist non-purple strains in changing colours, however this will not work with all plants.

OTHER WAYS TO GET MORE PURPLE?

DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES

There are various alternative methods for changing the colour of your plants.
The majority of these strategies, however, entail depriving your plants of specific nutrients, which we do not suggest.

Even if you do create any purple coloration using these alternate ways, it will almost certainly be at the expense of quality, flavour, and potency (AKA Garbage Weed).

THE WRONG WAYS TO PURPLE YOUR CANNABIS PLANT

BAD IDEAS

Many people wrongly assume that depriving their cannabis plants of oxygen is the greatest method to turn it purple.
Depriving your plants of oxygen, carbon dioxide, or any other gas, on the other hand, will not increase your odds of collecting purple buds.
Feeding your plants additional nitrogen will not change their colour, unless you overdo it and end up scorching them to a crisp shade of brown.

THE PRIMARY CAUSE OF WEED TURNING
PURPLE IS GENETICS.

GOOD GENES + TEMPERATURE

Remember that genetics and temperature are the two most important elements influencing the colour of your cannabis plants.
If you're serious about growing purple cannabis, invest in the appropriate genetics from the start.
